  1. Recruitment
  2. Positions are available for the Graduate Program of Data Science (GP-DS) for the 2018 academic year.

  3. Application requirements
  4. Applicants should satisfy the following requirements:

    • Graduate students belong to the following graduate programs at Tohoku University
      • Graduate School of Information Sciences
      • Graduate School of Life Sciences
      • Graduate School of Economics and Management
      • School of Medicine
      • Graduate School of Engineering
      • Graduate School of Science (Mathematics)
    • Currently a first year Master's student who entered her/his graduate school in 2017 April.)
    • Will be a second year Master's student (as of 2018 April)
    • Have a plan to work on his/her doctoral research project related to data science with international joint supervision
    • Have a strong recommendation from his/her current academic supervisor
    • Have reasonable expectations to join the GP-DS program


    • Students who will not go on to the PhD program are not eligible to apply to this program.
    • Students who will go on to the PhD program since 2018 April may be allowed to apply to this program in case the GPDS steering committee approves. If qualification for her/him to be a PhD student is not yet decided at the application, his/her academic advisor needs to mention that the applicant has a sufficient ability and accomplishment to be a PhD student in the recommendation letter. Please submit relevant publications that support applicant’s ability (if there is any).

      • National Tsing Hue University (Taiwan)
      • Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany)
      • The University of British Columbia (Canada)
      • The University of Sydney (Australia)
      • Paderborn University (Germany)

      (these are candidate universities with which the GP-DS steering committee aims to conclude an agreement for the jointly supervised degree program)

  5. Deadlines
  6. We accept application documents from December 11th 2017 to January 5th, 2018.
    *The dealine has been extended to January 5th, 2018.
    If you want to submit your application documents in person, please visit the GP-DS office 9am-4pm (except Saturdays and Sundays). The office address is at the bottom of this guideline.
    If you want to mail your application documents to the GP-DS office, please write “Application documents for the Graduate Program of Data Science” in red ink on the envelope. The documents must be arrived to the office no later than January 5th, 2018.

  8. Send your application documents to the GP-DS office by the deadline above.

    2. Statement of Purpose (Form B)
    3. Sealed recommendation letter (Form C)
    4. Undergraduate academic transcript and graduate academic transcript (original)
    5. Scores from either the TOEFLTM, TOEICTM, or IELTSTM


    • All application documents should be in Japanese or English. If the language is not either Japanese or English, please attached the translation.
    • Insufficient application documents will not be processed.
    • Submitted application documents are not returnable.

  9. Application evaluation
  10. Applications are evaluated on the basis of application documents and interview. The interview will be conducted from January 29th 2018 to February 2nd 2018.
    Applicants will be notified of the details of the interview.

  11. Notification
  12. Applicants will be notified of their admission status in late March 2018.

  13. Financial support
  14. We are committed to ensuring that students of the GP-DS program receive assistance toward their studies and research. The amount of financial support will be determined according to Tohoku University’s regulations. GP-DS students who (will) receive other financial support should contact the GP-DS office.

  15. Degree Requirements
  16. To complete this program, students need to satisfy the program-specific requirements in addition to the general degree requirements of his/her graduate school.
